The Elite Diamond Sports College Showcases

Elite Sports is proud to honor the life of Billy Monk and his decades of dedication to the fastpitch softball community.  Billy’s legend will continue as we provide two scholarships for each of our large College Showcases.

Billy was born in Abilene, TX on Jan. 6, 1943. While attending Abilene High School, he played baseball, and basketball, earning various awards, and was voted “Most Friendly” his senior year.  After graduating, Billy attended Texas Tech University, earning a bachelor’s degree, and was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.

For 46 years, Billy enjoyed an impressive career officiating basketball, baseball, and softball.  During this time he received numerous awards including:

• Induction into the Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame
• Induction into the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation Hall of Fame
• Was a charter member of the ASA National Indicator Fraternity
• Participated in numerous ASA National Tournaments, both as an umpire, and as Umpire-in-Chief
• In 1993 was appointed Dallas Metro ASA Umpire-in-Chief and served in this capacity until his death on August 25, 2009.
• NCAA Division 1 umpire
• Received International Softball Federation certification
• Selected to umpire the World Junior Olympic Championship in Australia
• Honored with the Wilson Sporting Goods Award of Excellence
• Served as TAAF State Commissioner, Regional Director, and was an Executive Board member
• Director of the adult Softball program for the City of Dallas, and Corsair Park in Grand Prairie

Billy was also an avid Texas Rangers fan, a season ticket holder, and attended every Opening Day since 1974.

Billy was a professional as well as a fan of the sport and he lived for the young ladies who had the passion for fastpitch as did he.  We all are happy to have known and worked with Billy throughout the years.

• Club team head coach for any team approved for the Elite Diamond Sports Summer College Showcase is responsible for nominating one player from their team deserving of the scholarship and shall provide a short write-up why the player is deserving.
• Nominated player must have graduated high school prior to the Elite Diamond Sports Summer College Showcase and be beginning their Freshman year in college the same year.
• Nominated players must fill out the complete Billy Monk Memorial Scholarship Application Form and submit with a valid copy of your final high school transcript to scholarship@eliteshowcase.com.
• All required documentation must be received by Elite Sports one week prior to the Elite Diamond Sports Summer College Showcase.  Final awards will be made after completion of the Summer Showcase.
• By participating in the Elite College Scholarship Program, parent(s) of the player(s) awarded the Billy Monk Memorial Scholarship agree that Elite Sports may publish the player's name, club team, college attending and field of study on any and all Elite Sports websites including Facebook and any other social media deemed appropriate by Elite Sports.
